Reinvigorating traditional crafts

The traditional techniques required in creating the perfect qipao or cheongsam - traditional Chinese dresses - are a true craft, requiring the combination of fine fabrics, quality workmanship, and a good understanding of the customer's figure. Hong Kong boasted over 3,000 tailors specialising in creating these intricate garments during the industry’s peak in 1950’s to 60’s, however this number has now dwindled to just a handful.

Through the organisation of multiple consumer workshops - for both children and adults – including demonstrations from seasoned qipao tailors, EcoChic Design Award 2011 winner Janko Lam hopes to reacquaint Hong Kongers to this beautiful craft once again. Adding to the appeal with a modern and sustainable twist, Janko works with participants during workshops, guiding them to create their own bespoke pieces through up-cycling leftover fabrics.
