The EcoChic Design Award Educator Pack has been developed by Redress as entry-level material to enable educators in higher education to deliver the message of sustainable fashion.

Available in English, Chinese (simplified and traditional) and French.

This pack has been created after many years consulting with educators and students from varying levels of research and development in sustainable fashion. We found an overwhelming need globally for supporting educators to integrate sustainability into the curriculum. In particular, this pack evolved after a key roundtable discussion held in collaboration with Hong Kong Design Institute in 2015 on ‘The Future of Sustainable Fashion Education’ which revealed key findings below.

  • There is insufficient knowledge around the complex field of sustainability in fashion for both educators and students
  • There are a lack of teaching resources, and the existing curriculum schedule allows little or no time for fashion students and educators to develop new content
  • A mismatch exists between the level of sustainability education provided by fashion universities and the needs of the industry

The Educator pack provides tools and resources to enable educators to introduce the topics of A Garment’s Lifecycle, Zero-waste, Up-cycling and Reconstruction to students, with minimal research needed. Each topic contains a minimum of one-hour worth of teaching materials, and includes exercises and out of class project briefs of various lengths.

 

WHY IS SUSTAINABLE KNOWLEDGE ESSENTIAL FOR STUDENTS?

  • Students need to understand how to cope with the vast, negative impacts as they launch their careers but they also need to know how to make a positive impact.
  • History tells us that crises leads to innovation and opportunity – and we want fashion students today to learn how to overcome these crises and challenges.
  • Large fashion brands are looking for employees who understand sustainability, so those students who graduate with sustainability knowledge have a competitive advantage over many others for their future careers. To understand how to adapt their design technique to become sustainable designers. Or simply to be ready to adapt to future challenges.

WHY SHOULD YOUR INSTITUTION TEACH SUSTAINABILITY?

  • More global brands are integrating sustainability in their business DNA with long-term investments, therefore students need to be equipped with the knowledge to maximise job opportunities. For example, from the luxury sector, Kering developed their Environmental Profit & Loss (E P&L) in 2010 and has been using it to measure the environmental impacts from their supply chains in monetary terms. And from the high street, in 2015 H&M started their now annual, Global Change Award, which offers €1 million to innovative projects tackling sustainability challenges in the supply chain.
  • More new independent businesses are proving that there is money to be made in sustainability. US brand Reformation, generated over $25 million in revenuein 2014 and is expected to triple in the coming years. Another thriving startup is Everlane, started in 2011 in the US with transparency at the core of the business, whose 2015 sales stood at $35 million.
  • More leading fashion education institutions are including sustainability in their curriculums, g. Central Saint Martins, London College of Fashion, ESMOD Berlin, Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons The New School for Design, and Massey University Wellington, proving that transformation is starting to happen on a wide scale.
  • Students are demanding more education about sustainability. Prior to the UN’s COP21 conference in Paris, a network of over 10,000 universities, colleges and student organisations demanded that more research and education on addressing climate change was needed. This generation are more aware of the challenges and want to be part of the solution therefore we must enable that demand. A survey by Redress found that 97% of emerging fashion designers and students in Asia and Europe believe that sustainable fashion education is critical for fashion designers.
